ABOUT THE REPUBLIC

Nauru, the island country in a southwest part of the Pacific Ocean. It consists of the lifted coral island located in southeast Micronesia in 40 miles (40 km) to the south from the Equator. The island is approximately in 800 miles (1300 km) to the northeast from the Solomon Islands; his closest neighbor is the island of Banaba, in Kiribati, approximately in 200 miles (300 km) on the East. Nauru has no official capital, but government agencies are located in the area Yaren.

GEOGRAPHY

The most part of Nauru sharply rises from the ocean, and there are no harbors or the protected piers. Quite fertile, but rather tight belt surrounds the island and surrounds a superficial internal lagoon of Buad. Along all coast coral rocks rise by the plateau at the height of 100 meters (30 meters) above sea level, with the highest point about 213 feet (65 meters). POPULATION

Most of inhabitants of the island are radical nauruana. Nauruan - national language. No adequate written grammar of language was compiled, and its relations with other Micronesian languages are insufficiently clear. English is widespread. Nauru is considered one of the most western countries in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. At the end of 2001 agreed to accept Nauru to 1200 refugees, generally Afghans or Iraqis who were intercepted by the Australian navy in the Indian Ocean. Australia paid about 10 million dollars (Australian) in exchange for the fact that Nauru spends migrants while their petitions for granting a shelter are processed. Detention until several years and also as it is reported, bad conditions in the camp, called concern of the international community in connection with human rights violations from Australia. In December, 2002 the agreement was expanded to capture 1 500 more people for additional 14 mln. dollars of the USA. In the next years the number of refugees was slowly reduced in process of processing of applications. The last refugees left the island in February, 2018.

ECONOMY

Agriculture (except for coffee and kopravy plantations along coastal and lagunny perimeters), fishery, production and tourism bear minor value for the general economy. Nevertheless, Nauru has the exclusive economic zone stretching for 200 miles (320 km) from the coast.
