TOPOGRAPHY
There are five main geographical zones: the narrow coastal plain along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea; mountain and mountain regions, including Mountains Ansariya ("Alawites") in the northwest, parallel to the coast, east slopes of the Anti-Lebanon mountains and Dzhabal-ad-Duruz in the southeast; the cultivated area to the east from ansariysky and Anti-Lebanon ridges which is the widest in the north, faltering between Himsh and Damascus; the steppe and desert areas crossed by the Euphrates River (Al-Furat); and Dzhazir in the northeast, the steppe country with low hilly hills.
The Anti-Lebanon mountains stretching for the South along the Lebanese border serve as a reservoir for rainfall of the central Syria. To the north from this area, Mount Ansariya which reach heights more than 1500 m (5000 feet), an inclination to the West to the Mediterranean Sea. The river Oront (Asya) irrigates areas on East side of Ansariysky mountains.
