ABOUT THE COUNTRY
The state of Guyana is located in South America, on the Atlantic Ocean, bordering in the northwest on Venezuela (743 km), in the southwest and the South with Brazil (1119 km), and in the east with Surinam (600 km). Boundary transition between Guyana and Venezuela and Surinam is called in question by both countries.
HISTORY
Coasts of South America of modern Guyanese Europeans were open and began to study at the beginning of the 16th century. At that time there lived the South American Indians from tribes the Arawak. Establishment of the British colony - the British Guyana is dated 1831; borders on the Dutch Guyana (Surinam today), and the French colony - French Guiana which is still remaining the dependent territory of this European megalopolis was slightly farther on the southeast. ECONOMY
In the territory of Guyana there are valuable mineral resources. The major raw materials is bauxite. Their operation was carried out in 1916 in the mine to Mackenzie (Linden), then to Ituni and Kvakvani in a northeast part of the country. Bauxite mining is best of all illustrated by state of the economy: 1950 - 1,7 million tons, 1960 - 3,4 million, 1970 - 1,4 million, and in 1993 - 2,5 million tons.
In comparison with bauxites extraction of other raw materials is of secondary importance. In a northwest part of the country, around Mattews Ridgs, manganese ore, and gold (80 000 ounces in 1992) and diamonds is extracted (7000 carats in 1990).
