ABOUT THE ISLAND

Montserrat, island and overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The island of a pear-shaped form entering a chain of the Lesser Antilles is known as "The emerald island of the Caribbean Sea", partly because of its large number of people from Ireland. Montserrat is located approximately in 27 miles (43 km) to the southwest from Antigua and approximately in 30 miles (50 km) to the northwest from Guadeloupe.

GEOLOGY

Plymouth, on the southwest coast, was the capital and the only port of entrance till 1997 when eruptions of volcanoes destroyed the most part of the city and the most spectacular vegetation of the island. Subsequently activity of the government was transferred to the estate Breyds (which is usually called by Breyds) and the neighboring areas in a northwest part of the island. Thus, de facto the capital is in Breyda and around it. Called and called Christopher Columbus in 1493, Montserrat - rich mix of the African, North American and European influence. Its physical and human landscapes were beaten, but not destroyed by a series of natural disasters which surround the island. The area is 40 square miles (103 sq.km). The population gradually decreases and makes 4,922 people, because of volcanic eruptions.

NATURE

Montserrat makes 11 miles (18 km) in length and 7 miles (11 km) width. The strong volcanic landscape of the island is created by three mountainous areas - Silver hills, the Central hills and Hills Sufriyer which, in turn, are cut by the narrow valleys and gorges known at the local level as gagate. Silver hills, in the north, and the central hills are covered with the wood at higher heights, but have a secondary srub on softer lower contours. Chances the Peak, on Hills Sufriyer, was on the ball 3000 feet (915 meters), the highest point on the island to the middle of the 1990th years when the first eruptions of volcanoes in the history of Montserrati sharply changed a landscape. In July, 1995 a series of eruptions as a result of which volcanic domes on Hills Sufriyer serially grew and fell began. In June, 1997 19 people were killed, and at the end of December of the same year of nearly 7,5 square kilometers (7 square kilometers) of the woods, agricultural grounds and villages were flattened by fragments and a pyroclastic stream after volcanic explosion.

POPULATION

The population substantially treats the African family tree (black), with a small amount of people of the European origin (white) and the mixed descent. Official language - English, but the majority Montserratov is also spoken the Creole language similar to that say in Jamaica. The main religious faiths are Christians: Anglicanism, Methodism, Pentecostalism, Roman Catholicism and Adventism of the seventh day.
