ABOUT THE COUNTRY

Gambia divides historical roots with many other West African people in a slave trade which was a key factor in placement and storage of colony on the river Gambia, at first Portuguese, during which it was known as A-Gambia. Later, on May 25, 1765, Gambia was included in structure of the British Empire when the government officially undertook management, having created the Province of Senegambiya. In 1965 Gambia found independence under the leadership of Davda Dzhavar who governed until Yahya Dzhammekh seized power in a bloodless coup of 1994. Adam Barrow became the third president of Gambia in January, 2017, after the victory over Jammeh in December, 2016. Dzhammekh at first accepted results, then refused to accept them that called the constitutional crisis and military intervention of Economic community of the West African states therefore he was expelled.

GEOGRAPHY

Gambia - very small and narrow country which borders surround the twisting river Gambia. It lies between latitudes of 13 and 14 °C. highway. And longitudes 13 and 17 ° WL.
Gambia has width less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) in the widest point which total area is 11 295 sq.km (4 361 quarter. Miles). About 1300 square kilometers (500 square miles) (11,5%) of the territory of Gambia are covered with water. It is the smallest country on the African continent. In comparative terms Gambia has total area, a little smaller the areas of the island of Jamaica.
Senegal surrounds Gambia from three parties, from 80 km (50 miles) of the coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, noting its westernmost tip.
The existing borders were defined in 1889 after the agreement between the United Kingdom and France. During negotiations between the French and British in Paris the French at first gave to the British about 200 miles (320 km) from the river Gambia to control. Since placement of boundary markers in 1891, after the Parisian meetings nearly 15 years were required to define final borders of Gambia. The received series of straight lines and arches gave the British control over areas approximately in 10 miles (16 km) to the North and the South from the river Gambia.

CLIMATE

In Gambia tropical climate. The hot and rainy season usually lasts from June to November, but since then and till May more cool temperatures with a smaller amount of precipitation prevail. The climate in Gambia is very similar to climate of the neighboring Senegal, the southern Mali and a northern part of Benin.

CULTURE

Though Gambia - the smallest country on continental Africa, its culture is a product of very different influences. National borders designate a narrow strip on both sides of the river Gambia, the reservoir which played the vital role in the fate of the nation and is known locally just as "river".
