To the south from Cairo the most part of the country (known as the Top Egypt) is the plantation rising up to about 460 m (1500 feet). The narrow valley of Nile is surrounded with rocks 550 m high (1800 feet) as the river flows approximately in 900 km (560 miles) from Aswan to Cairo. A number of cascades and thresholds in Aswan, known as the First cataract (other cataracts are in Sudan), creates a barrier to the movement upstream.
