Money: On May 13, 1973 the rial Qatar (qr) from 100 dirhams was entered. There are coins from 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 dirhams and a note of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 rials. qr1 = $0.27473 (or $1 = qr3.64) as of 2005.

WEIGHT AND MEASURES: the metric system is the legal standard though some British measures are still used.

HOLIDAYS: Day of continuity of the Emir, on February 22; Independence Day, on September 3. Muslim religious holidays include "Ides al-Fitr", "Eid al-Adha" and Milad a-Nabi.

ARRANGEMENT, SIZE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Consisting of 11 437 sq.km (4 416 quarter. Miles), the state of Qatar consists of the peninsula acting on the North to the Persian Gulf about 160 km long (100 miles) nanosecond and 90 km (55 miles). Rather, the space occupied by Qatar is a little less than State of Connecticut. It borders on Saudi Arabia and has the total length of border of 623 km (387 miles) from which 563 km (350 miles) are a coastline. A number of islands, the most important of which is Khalil, also enters Qatar.

The islands of Havar which for many years were a part of a border dispute between Qatar and Bahrain were awarded to Bahrain by the International Court of Justice in 2001.
The capital of Qatar, Doha, is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf.

TOPOGRAPHY

The area usually flat and sandy, gradually rising from the East by the central calcareous plateau. About 56 km (35 miles) in length, антиклинарь the Dukhan rise from the western coast as a chain of hills up to 100 m high (325 feet). Some low rocks note the northern end of east coast. Existence of extensive saline soils on the basis of the peninsula confirms the theory that Qatar once was the island.

CLIMATE

Qatar summer, from May to October, very hot. Average temperature in June is 42 °C (108 °F), having fallen up to 15 °C (59 °F) in the winter. The humidity is high along the coast. Rainfall is minimum.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Vegetation, as a rule, rare and typical for deserts of the Persian Gulf. The gazelle, once usual in Qatar, now seldom meets. Jerboas (desert rats) and a casual fox are found. Birds include a flamingo, a cormorant, a skopa, the kestrel, a plura, to a lark and other migrants. Reptiles turn on monitors, other lizards and land snakes. Life in the seas around Qatar is considerable and various, including a shrimp, a royal mackerel, a shark, a perch and a sword fish.

ENVIRONMENT

Ecological responsibility is conferred on the Ministry of the industry and agriculture. In 1984 the Committee on environmental protection for monitoring of environmental problems was created. Preservation of reserves of oil, preservation of natural heritage of the wild nature and increase in water supply due to desalting are high in the list of priorities of the environment of Qatar.
