ABOUT THE COUNTRY

Dominican Republic (Spanish: Republica Dominicana [republika dominikana]) is the sovereign state located on the island of Hispaniola in the archipelago Big the Antilles in the Caribbean region. It occupies east five eighth islands which it divides with the nation of Haiti that does Hispaniola to one of two Caribbean islands together with Saint Martin which divide two countries. Dominican Republic is the second-large Caribbean nation on the area (after Cuba) on 48 445 square kilometers (18 705 quarter. Miles) and a third - the population about 10 million people from whom about three million live in the capital district of Santo Domingo, in the capital.

GEOGRAPHY

Dominican Republic is located in east part of the second-large island on the Big Antilles, Hispaniola. It divides the island approximately with a ratio 2: 1 with Haiti. The area of the country is reported differently as 48 442 sq.km (18 704 quarter. Miles) (embassy in the United States) and 48 730 sq.km (18 815 quarter. Miles) that does it by the second-large country on the Antilles after Cuba, the Valley of Dominican Republic and the largest capital Santo Domingo area are on the southern coast.
There are many small sea islands and islands which are a part of the Dominican territory. Two largest islands at coast are Saona, in the southeast and Beata, in the southwest. In the north, at distance of 100-200 kilometers (62-124 miles), are located three extensive, generally flooded coast which geographically are southeast continuation of the Bahamas: Navidad Bank, Silver Bank and Mouchoir Bank. Navidad Bank and Silver Bank are declared by Dominican Republic officially.

NATURE

Dominican Republic has climate of the rainforest in coastal and low-lying areas. Because of the various topography the climate of Dominican Republic shows considerable variations on short distances and is the most various of all Antilles. Average annual temperature is 25 °C (77 °F). On higher marks temperature averages 18 °C (64,4 °F), and near sea level average temperature is 28 °C (82,4 °F). In mountains low temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) are possible, and in the protected valleys high temperatures of 40 °C (104 °F) are possible. January and February - the most cool months of year, and August - the hottest month. Snowfall can be seen in rare instances at Pico Duarte's top.
