Located in Eastern Europe, to the north from the Balkan Peninsula, Romania has the total area of 237 500 sq.km (91 699 quarter. Miles). Rather, the area occupied with Romania is a little less than State of Oregon. The sizes of the country are made by 789 km (490 miles) and-475 km (295 miles) of nanosecond. It is limited on n and ne to Ukraine and Moldova, on the bank of the Black Sea, on Bulgaria, on Serbians and on Hungary with a total length of border of 2733 km (1,698 mi) from which 225 km (140 miles) are a coastline. TOPOGRAPHY

The frame of Romania is formed by Carpathians Mountains which shake on the southeast, and then on the West through the whole country. South country this arc-shaped system is known as the Transylvanian Alps whose compact, strong peaks rise up to 2543 m (8 343 feet) in mountains. To Moldovaun, the highest in Romania. east Carpathians have the average height of 1000 m (3300 feet) and exceed 1900 m (6 200 feet) only in the highest ranges.
On east and southern suburbs of the Carpathian arch there are low plateaus and plains of Walachia stretching to the Prut River (the Moldavian border) in the east of and to Danube (the Bulgarian border) in the south. From the inside of the Carpathian arch there is the Transylvanian basin, the hilly area cut by wide deep valleys of the Muresh and Somov Rivers.

Dobrudja located between the lower Danube and the Black Sea represents the bald-headed plateau with average heights from 400 to 600 m (1,310-1,970 feet). Except for the low, marshy Danube Delta in the north, the Black Sea coast Dobrudja coolly, overlooking the sea with almost vertical rocks.
Romania is subject to strong earthquakes. The earthquake which struck Romania on March 4, 1977 destroyed or seriously hurt about 33 000 buildings and more than 34 000 families left the homeless. The shock measured 7.2 on the Richter scale with the open end was the most serious in Europe after a series of shocks in October-November, 1940, also in Romania.
